Fish assemblage structure in a port region of the Amazonic coast Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Silva,Marcelo H. L.; Torres Júnior,Audálio R.; Castro,Antonio C. L.; Azevedo,James W. J.; Ferreira,Cássia F. C.; Cardoso,Rayssa L.; Nunes,Jorge L. S.; Carvalho-Neta,Raimunda N. F..
ABSTRACT: The fish assemblage structure in a port area in São Marcos Bay (Amazonic coast) was evaluated based on the spatial and temporal distributions to identify potential changes in response to anthropic pressure increases associated with industrial and port activities in region. The samples were taken between March 2011 and November 2015. The ichthyofauna was represented by a total of 56 species, distributed in 15 orders and 29 families. Captures were dominated by Genyatremus luteus (Bloch, 1790), but Sciades proops (Valenciennes, 1840) was the most representative in terms of biomass. Seasonal distributions of fish assemblage did not reveal significant differences. However, there was a difference between catch sites, abundance, biomass and Shannon...

Food Preference of Cavia magna (Rodentia: Caviidae) on a Subtropical Island in Southern Brazil BABT
Veiga,Kelen Rodrigues da; Hefler,Sônia Marisa; Colares,Elton Pinto; Colares,Ioni Gonçalves.
Abstract This study aimed to link the plants consumed by Cavia magna and their availability in the environment, (Ilha dos Marinheiros) determining its food preference. In the environment, 96 species were recorded. Twenty-four plant species were identified in the fecal samples. There wasn’t significant difference in the composition of plant species among seasons, although the variation was significant between the island’s northern and southern areas concerning the fecal samples. Mantel test’s results supported that the availability of vegetation has significant influence on the species consumed. Being that the most consumed species (present on the feces) were distant to their distribution areas, we propose that C. magna of Ilha dos Marinheiros actively...

Fortnightly tidal asymmetry inversions and perspectives on sediment dynamics in a macrotidal estuary (Charente, France) ArchiMer
Toublanc, Florence; Brenon, Isabelle; Coulombier, T.; Le Moine, Olivier.
Tidal asymmetry is a phenomenon that characterises estuarine hydrodynamics and has a strong impact on sediment dynamics. Extensive research has been dedicated to studying tidal dynamics in semidiurnal macrotidal estuaries, highlighting several general principles. The ratio of flood to ebb peak velocities and differences in ebb and flood durations are often used to characterise the asymmetry encountered in estuaries. In the Charente estuary (French Atlantic coast), water surface elevation data obtained using an ADCP (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler) and a tide gauge show that the duration asymmetry undergoes inversions during the spring-neap tidal cycle. A two-dimensional hydrodynamics model is used to investigate the connection between spring-neap...

Oyster reefs are among the most threatened marine habitats globally. In Europe, oyster reefs have been extirpated from most locations within their historical range. Active restoration of the native oyster (Ostrea edulis) in Europe has grown substantially in recent years. In sharing experiences between oyster restoration projects in Europe at the Native Oyster Restoration Alliance conference, NORA2, in Edinburgh in May 2019, it became apparent that a number of similar barriers are experienced. This study identified the top 40 questions, which, if answered, would have the greatest influence on the policy and practice of oyster restoration in Europe. Initially 71 people were consulted across 28 institutions and 11 European countries to generate 194 questions....

Further observations on zooplankton of the Potengi Estuary (Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil) with special reference to the larvae of Brachyura (Crustacea, Decapoda) Zoologia
Sankarankutty,C; Oliveira,J.E. Lins; Cunha,K.M.F; Silva,A.C.C; Barroca,E.V.G.
The present paper deals with data on zooplankton collected from the estuary of Potengi, Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil covering a period of one year from October 1992 to October 1993. Three fixed stations within the estuary located at varying distances from the mouth of the river were sampled. Sampling was done monthly when the tide was lowest. Analysis of the samples has shown clear pattern of seasonal variations in abundance of the dominant zooplankton components which are composed of Copepoda, Appendicularia, larvae of Brachyura, larvae of Cirripedia and Chaetognalha. A detailed study of the larvae of Brachyura was also attempted which showed that seven species can be identified in the samples, of which those of Aratus pisonii (H. Milne Edwards) and...

Géochimie du mercure dans le continuum de la retenue de Petit-Saut et de l'estuaire du Sinnamary, Guyane française ArchiMer
Muresan Paslaru, Bogdan.
The mercury cycle was explored in the Petit-Saut reservoir / Sinnamary Estuary continuum in French Guiana. Main processes involve (i) photo-induced reduction, (ii) adsorption and desorption at the particle surfaces, (iii) methylating bacterial activity, (iv) precipitation and dissolution of iron oxyhydroxides and sulfides. Sources of mercury to the Petit-Saut reservoir consist of the partly impacted river-tributaries, the atmospheric deposition and the flooded soils or vegetation. Once into the reservoir, divalent mercury undergoes a large spectrum of transformations including speciation and phase changes. We, here, probe these processes and demonstrate that the Petit-Saut reservoir behaves as a privileged site for atmospheric recycling and in situ...

Gonadal development and sexuality of Larkinia grandis (Arcida: Arcidae) inhabiting southeastern Gulf of California Rev. Bras. Zool.
Sotelo-Gonzalez,Maria I.; García-Ulloa,Manuel; Góngora-Gómez,Andrés M.; Salcido-Guevara,Luis A.; Arzola-González,Juan F.; Sepúlveda,Carlos H.; Sánchez-Cárdenas,Rebeca.
ABSTRACT Larkinia grandis (Broderip & G.B. Sowerby I, 1829), an important fishing resource for Mexican communities, is an Arcidae clam. It is also considered a species with aquaculture potential. In this work we investigated the gonadal phases and sexuality in a population of L. grandis in the Gulf of California. Our findings support the hypothesis that there is one male per female in the population studied. It also documents that the shape, position and color of the gonads of L. grandis are consistent with observations in other Arcidae species. Additionally, five gonadal phases are differentiated and described in males and females (development, mature, spawning, post-spawning and resting), with a noticeable presence of brown cells during post-spawning...

Little is known about the variability of ecosystem service values at spatial scales most relevant to local decision makers. Competing definitions of ecosystem services, the paucity of ecological and economic information, and the lack of standardization in methodology are major obstacles to applying the ecosystem-services approach at the estuary scale. We present a standardized method that combines habitat maps and habitat–faunal associations to estimate ecosystem service values for recreational and commercial fisheries in estuaries. Three case studies in estuaries on the U.S. west coast (Yaquina Bay, Oregon), east coast (Lagoon Pond, Massachusetts), and the Gulf of Mexico (Weeks Bay, Alabama) are presented to illustrate our method’s...

Hydrodynamic Aspects at Vitória Bay Mouth, ES Anais da ABC (AABC)
GARONCE,FLÁVIA A.A.; QUARESMA,VALÉRIA S..
Understading the hydrodynamic behavior and suspended particulated matter (SPM) transport are of great importance in port regions such as Vitória Harbor, which is located at Vitória Bay, Vitória – ES, Brazil. Vitória Bay is an estuary that has not been systematically assessed through a temporal analysis in order to identify its hydrodynamics characteristics and SPM exchange. This study aims to investigate salt and suspended particulate matter flux at the estuarine mouth of Vitória Bay by understanding the temporal variation of salinity, temperature and tidal currents within the water column and at the channel crosssection. Results showed that the estuarine mouth tended to present partial stratification periods during neap tides and little stratification in...

The rate of flow of the fresh water releases at the Arzal Dam into the Vilaine is likely to influence the haline structure of Vilaine Bay. In order to determine the rate of flow that causes a minimum downstream stratification, a vertical two-dimensional mathematical modelling of the Vilaine's estuary was undertaken. We obtain very similar stratification flows for different fresh water release scenarios, in spite of the rather different desalinisations and currents.

Impact of a power plant cooling system on copepod and meroplankton survival (Bahía Blanca estuary, Argentina) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Hoffmeyer,Mónica Susana; Biancalana,Florencia; Berasategui,Anabella.
The impact of a power plant cooling system in the Bahía Blanca estuary (Argentina) on the survival of target zooplanktonic organisms (copepods and crustacean larvae) and on overall mesozooplankton abundance was evaluated over time. Mortality rates were calculated for juveniles and adults of four key species in the estuary: Acartia tonsa Dana, 1849 and Eurytemora americana Williams, 1906 (native and invading copepods), and larvae of the crab Chasmagnathus granulata Dana, 1851 and the invading cirriped Balanus glandula Darwin, 1854. Mean total mortality values were up to four times higher at the water discharge site than at intake, though for all four species, significant differences were only registered in post-capture mortality. The findings show no...

Impacts of the construction of the Port of Suape on phytoplankton in the Ipojuca River estuary (Pernambuco-Brazil) BABT
Koening,Maria Luise; Leça,Enide Eskinazi; Neumann-Leitão,Sigrid; Macêdo,Silvio José de.
In order to address the impact on phytoplankton, sampling was conducted monthly at 4 fixed stations, from April/86 to March/87 at diurnal low and high tide using a plankton net (65 mum mesh size) and a 1 L Van Dorn bottle. Among the 133 taxa identified, marine littoral euryhaline species were most common, outranking Gyrosigma balticum (Ehrenberg) Rabenhorst, Nitzschia sigma (Kützing) Wm. Smith, Licmophora abbreviata Agardh, Climacosphenia moniligera Ehrenberg, Surirella febigerii Lewis, Terpsinoe musica Ehrenberg and Cylindrotheca closterium (Ehrenberg) Reiman and Lewis. The port construction caused significant changes to the phytoplankton community with a strong influence of marine species (mainly dinoflagellate) because of the opening of the reef near...

Influence of hydro-sedimentary factors on mollusc death assemblages in a temperate mixed tide-and-wave dominated coastal environment: Implications for the fossil record ArchiMer
Poirier, Clement; Sauriau, Pierre-guy; Chaumillon, Eric; Bertin, Xavier.
Mollusc death assemblages were recovered in 98 subtidal sampling stations on the seafloor of the shallow Pertuis Charentais Sea (Atlantic coast of France). Taxonomic composition and spatial distribution of death assemblages were investigated, as well as their response to sediment grain size (field data), bottom shear stress (coupled tide and wave hydrodynamic modelling), and sediment budget (bathymetric difference map) Results showed that molluscs are likely to be reliable paleoenvironmental indicators since death assemblages were able to acquire ecological changes within years (decadal-scale taphonomic inertia), and live-dead agreement inferred from existing data on living benthic communities was high, except close to river mouths and intertidal mudflats...

Integrating the effects of salinity on the physiology of the eastern oyster, Crassostrea virginica, in the northern Gulf of Mexico through a Dynamic Energy Budget model ArchiMer
Lavaud, Romain; La Peyre, Megan K.; Casas, Sandra M.; Bacher, Cedric; La Peyre, Jerome F..
We present a Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) model for the eastern oyster, Crassostrea virginica, which enables the inclusion of salinity as a third environmental variable, on top of the standard foodr and temperature variables. Salinity changes have various effects on the physiology of oysters, potentially altering filtration and respiration rates, and ultimately impacting growth, reproduction and mortality. We tested different hypotheses as to how to include these effects in a DEB model for C. virginica. Specifically, we tested two potential mechanisms to explain changes in oyster shell growth (cm), tissue dry weight (g) and gonad dry weight (g) when salinity moves away from the ideal range: 1) a negative effect on filtration rate and 2) an additional...

La contamination de la Gironde par le cadmium : origine, extension, importance ArchiMer
Boutier, Bernard; Chiffoleau, Jean-francois; Jouanneau, Jean-marie; Latouche, Claude; Philipps, Isabelle.
In 1979, the French monitoring program RNO (Réseau National d'Observation de la qualité du milieu Marin) pointed out a dramatic cadmium contamination in the oysters from the Gironde estuary (up to 100 ug -1, dry weight). The wild oyster-beds upstream the estuary were shown to be the most contaminated. This result tends to point to the river as the source of the cadmium contamination. At the same rime, uncontaminated oysters from Arcachon were transplanted in the Gironde estuary (La Fosse, Dau). This ex periment confirmed the importance and proved the permanence of the contamination. Very high concentrations of dissolved cadmium (400 ng. 1-1) were measured in the estuarine mixing zone. This phenomenon can be explained by the desorption of cadmiumfrom...

Abarnou, Alain.
PCB contamination and i ts relationship wi th suspended particulate matter (SPM) have been studied in water from the Seine estuary and the baie de Seine, in July 1985 and February 1986. PCB chromatograms are very similar and characterize a chronic contamination. PCB concentrations vary from 2 ng/l in the marine zone up to 210 ng/l in the estuary. SPM and PCB concentrations are weIl correlated. Highest PCB concentrations are measured in February due to higher SPM inputs mainly made of finer particles.

Guerault, Daniel; Desaunay, Yves; Bellois, Pierre; Grellier, Patrick; Robin, Jean-paul; Robineau, Brigitte.
A survey of the glass-eel fishery in the Loire estuary in 1987 (265 boats, 117 tons gasseel, 13733 fishing trips) showed that 16 fishery species constitute the by-catch (49,3 million individuals, mainly juveniles, among which 98 % consist in flounder, sprat and brown shrimp). The analysis of catches in space and time leads to proposaIs for Iimiting the impact during the last fishing weeks. Taking into account the naturai mortality rates of the concerned juveniles, an attempt is made to estimate the actuai impact of the glasseel fishery, after a delay. Only 10 % of the caught brown shrimps wouid have been recruited in the summer shrimp fishery. Up to 85,5 to 97,6 % of juvenile fishes would have disappeared during the following year by natural mortality.
